Exporting to Registry crashes system

I have had a problem with the Registry Editor in Windows 95. Every time I try to export the Registry, it crashes and Crash Protector pops up on screen. I have tried saving selected branches and this seems to work okay, but the Hkey_Local_Machine branch hangs on Regedit. Any ideas?

We would guess that you have a corrupt or unusually long key value in the Hkey_Local_Machine branch of the Registry. If that is the case, we suspect that trying to export the Registry using the MS-DOS Registry Editor with the command 'Regedit /e filename.reg Hkey_Local_Machine' will also fail, although it's worth trying. (Note: this command must be run from MS-DOS, not a Windows command prompt.)

Some utility packages contain Registry fixing tools, which may solve the problem. The only alternative we can think of is to run ScanReg, which is a standard tool with later versions of Windows 95 and Windows 98. If you don't have a copy it may be possible to find one on Microsoft's website, but it's probably easier to get a copy from a system running Windows 98.

You need three files: scanreg.exe in \Windows\Command, and scanregw.exe and scanreg.ini in \Windows. ScanReg checks the Registry and also makes a daily backup of it, so it should run at every startup (which it normally does under Windows 98.)

Otherwise, you could try exporting subkeys of Hkey_Local_Machine until you have homed in on the one that is causing the problem. What you do then, of course, will depend on what you find.
